Look how far we’ve come!
Over the weekend [Khaas of Bloodscalp US] completed his insane achievement. He sent me through his screenshot for the insane [Hall of Fame] which brings the hall of fame to 60 screenshots with a total of 67 insane titles.
Shortly over a year ago when I published the first few rep guides for the insane title I’m not sure I expected such a community to form around them. In April 2009, the month I published my Ravenholdt guide, saate.net received 689 visitors for the entire month.
Fast forward to a year later and now 1000 people a day are visiting to check out the guides, puzzles and other random stuff. That’s pretty extraordinary in my book. :)
Huge thanks to everyone who’s used the guides, sent in screenshots, added comments and especially referred people here!
Warcraft Word Jumble – Lax
Here’s the Word Jumble for this week. A shout out and thanks goes to Lax of Lavishsoft for his help this week in getting my 5-box shaman team working properly. His ISBoxer Suite software is amazing for multiboxing and I can’t recommend it enough!
The words in this one are reasonably easy I think. One of them is a dungeon instance and might prove tricky for a few people. Enjoy!
Zevia: The Golden Age of Gaming
Hey guys, Zevia here. While listening to old video game music, I got to thinking about the topic of how many older gamers think video games just aren’t as good as they used to be, and the counterargument that they only think that because of good ol’ nostalgia.
The first 3 minutes are some thoughts concerning that topic, and the rest of the video is browsing through a small handful of games I used to own and discussing the merits of playing older games.
What do you think? Were games better in the Genesis/SNES days?
Warcraft Word Jumble – Lintelotiel
Here’s the latest Jumble for you guys. This one is for my good friend [Lintelotiel] of Thaurissan.
Lint has been playing WoW just as long as I have and when we crossed paths on Aman’thul some months back it was definitely an evil (or good?) twin moment! You can read about the wierd and wonderful milestones he’s achieved on his wiki page here.
Update: Thanks again to Cal the jumbles now have a score keeping system along with an all-time leaderboard! Finish any jumble and add your name to the scores to compete!
Congrats to McRaffles of Warcraft Casuals who was the winner of the [Sandbox Spectral Tiger] card from last week (after my /random 1-30 roll came up with me twice!).
Warcraft Word Jumble – Mike Schramm
Here’s the latest Jumble for you guys. This week is a shout out to [Mike Schramm], former senior editor on WoW.com and blogger extraordinaire. He’s been kind enough to spread the word about the Jumbles on a few occasions and, frankly, I’m amazed that he even knows about saate.net!
I’ve got a feeling you might have trouble on 3 and 4, especially since I forgot what they were while I was putting it together and had a hard time figuring it out again! Here’s a hint for you that will probably hinder more than help you – you can find #4 just one zone away from #3.
To make this week’s jumble a little more interesting, too, I’ve got a [Sandbox Spectral Tiger] card sitting here to give away. To be in the running just leave a comment and I’ll randomly select someone to receive the code – have fun!
“Controlling the Market”
People often chat to me about their gold making techniques and experiences. From time to time I see the phrase ‘controlling the market’ used and it bothers me. The economically uninitiated throw it around freely and for them it’s all about ego ego ego.
“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” -Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
If you’re the single person on your server with an ultra-rare recipe then you’re definitely entitled to say you ‘control’ the market. Similarly if you’re supplying a large majority (ie 90% plus) of a high demand item you may also be able to make that claim.
In reality, though, how often do you think that’s the case? It’d be a very rare occurrence these days, I can tell you that. I know that even the items I profit from most regularly I don’t have any sort of monopoly on.
There’s a big difference between controlling a market and identifying a market with reasonable demand and low supplier participation rates.

The above is a simple diagram I put together to help demonstrate my point. Unless you can control supply you can’t control the market. At the very best if you’re buying out everything in the Auction House you can temporarily set a higher price. That is until additional suppliers come along of course.
If the resupply rate is sufficiently low and there’s demand then you can make a profit this way. Although, again, most of the time I see people bragging about this it’s been for foolish high-supply materials.
I fondly remember, some years back, getting a hate whisper from someone after I’d posted a bunch of Greater Eternal Essences on the AH. The person abused me and told me I was setting my auctions too low. I responded and said something like “I set them at what I felt was an appropriate price, buy them if you think they’re too low”.
Totally misunderstanding what I’d said, the person assumed that in saying the word “set” I meant I’d “set” the market price. Boy was he hopping mad at that – “YOU SET THE PRICE? I’ve been controlling the market and setting the price for weeks!” he exclaimed. Wrong wrong wrong!
Clearly because he did not control the supply he did not control the market. Some random person was able to come along and unknowingly upset his imaginary little tea party.
So next time before you throw about the term ‘Controlling the market’ maybe have a think about it. Is it really the best way to describe what you’re doing or is perhaps “Minor manipulation through focused and regular intervention” more apt? actually…never mind me :p
Warcraft Word Jumble – Stokpile
Here’s the jumble for this week! I’ve been following Stokpile’s blog a bit lately and would recommend checking it out. If you thought my reaching gold cap was something think again – Stokpile has reached gold cap 4 times so far and is still going strong!
Some people might find number 4 a bit tricky so here’s a huge hint – answers 3 and 4 are “related”.
As usual if you could be cryptic in any comments you leave it’ll leave the other folks in suspense for longer :)
Zevia: Stupidly Comical
Hey folks, Zevia here – back from a bit of an absence but I do mention it in the video. Definitely looking to generate some feedback off this one, so feel free to comment or e-mail me any stories/examples of your own!

You should be banned!
As part of my routine each morning while I’m logging in to check my auctions on one monitor I’ll check out whats new on YouTube. Yesterday I noticed a new comment on my [Druid Thunderfury] video:
I have to say that, contrary to having any negative reaction, I find this kind of behaviour fascinating! Let’s take a step back and try to figure it out – what is he actually angry about? why would a person react like that upon learning about my achievement?
Initially I suspected it was a standard primitive ape ego trying to sour grapes soothe itself. I got the achievement, he wanted it and didnt have it, so my getting it must suck right? I mean why else should me completing an achievement mean anything to him otherwise?
Seeking answers I checked out his YouTube Profile. His last video upload was back in October 2009 and just so happened to be titled “Thunderfury – Blessed Blade of the Windseeker”. The description reading “One of my mates finally got the blade from combinding two legendary items from MC, and some Elementium Bars. – Enjoy”
Ah ha! So is that the answer? That he holds his friend’s Thunderfury achievement in such high regard that my having previously done it – on a druid no less – is an affront to his friend’s hard work?
“You cannot strengthen one by weakening another; and you cannot add to the stature of a dwarf by cutting off the leg of a giant.” -Benjamin Franklin Fairless
Certain people are always going to achieve for the sake of it. If there’s a reputation bar to fill up then people are going to do it. I saw that I could get an achievement for getting a useless shiny sword and so I went after it – I’ve done more for less in the past :-)
Let me know what your thoughts on this are! and what have your experiences with people like this been like?
