Gold Cap Reached!

Yesterday I officially hit the gold cap – the official limit at which point your character cannot receive any more gold. How much exactly? This much:

If anyone trades me even a copper, or if I try to take money from auctions from my mailbox, I get the following error message:

I thought in honor of this milestone I’d share some statistics based on my last 12 months of auctions data. Although my record keeping (via beancounter) is quite complete I’m missing all my raptor pet sales which I’d estimate as being around 100k.

My best sellers

A few interesting things here. You’ll notice that around August I stopped making gold by buying/reselling Abyss crystals. At the same time the market on the 40 stamina to bracer enchant collapsed. Why? The Argent Tournament patch was introduced, and the sudden flood of Abyss Crystals (from the 5-man) onto the market saw prices drop from 120g to 20g and under!

My most profitable week

I’ve had some good weeks, and I’ve had some really good weeks. My best week in the last 12 months was the 7th-13th June with approximately 35k in profit. The big spike day here was partly due to some Darkmoon Decks I’d hung onto from throughout the previous month leading up to the faire.

Where to from here? Well I’m probably sitting at around 230k at the moment so it’ll no doubt be time to spend a small amount on a few things I’ve been avoiding like the Kirin’tor ring and a chopper. From there I guess I’ll probably keep going…300k here I come!

Got any specific questions on how I did it? Hit me up with a comment below!

  1. So fantastic. I need to start studying your guide.

    Congratulations sir.

  2. First gratz Saate another well deserved accomplishment! I was just wondering something. I often buy up greens/ blues at low cost and d/e for for AH sales and was curious to whether i should convert those mats to scrolls or just keep listing the mats. Which makes more in the long run? Any advice on this and pretty much gold making in general would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

  3. Is that per character or per account?

  4. @Paw$er – I generally find that, at least for TBC and WOTLK enchanting mats, it’s always best to hang onto them and sell them as scrolls. It can vary though especially after major content patches when materials are scarce.

@Missus – It’s per character. So I can still store surplus gold on alts.

  5. P.S. Why are you guildless – I was thinking of transferring to an Oceanic server to raid and thought of you first :(

    • @Zmorris – Hai man :) Decided it was time to move on, so taking a few weeks and will look at options. Would definitely be cool to have you around on Aman’thul though!

  6. No achievement for this? lol

    • Something like this is sort of along the same lines as why they didn’t add in the titles for being the first 80 of your class. They didn’t want to promote a lot of time spent. Then again… look at Insane in the Membrane.

      • @Psychi – Actually I think it’s because there’s no way for them to prevent a group of people pooling their gold and trading it around so everyone could get the achievement/title.

If they added a purchasable title for 200k, though, I’d definitely go for it :) The problem with all this though is that the scrubs who can’t put together 5k for epic flying would be the same ones crying that it was unfair.

  7. Hey Saate, good to see you’re still making gold.
I’m confused however, are you selling the recipes of enchants or the enchants themselves?
Unfortunately I haven’t played in such a while that I’m not up to date with street prices so I don’t think I can fully appreciate these charts.
Yes about your guildless status, didn’t you move with Enraged a while ago? What happened.
But hey, I’m still up for that pizza you offered about 4 years ago.

    • @Terian – Hey mate :) Good to hear from you and that you’re doing well. Yeah I did move over with enraged back in June 09, was just time for something new for me though. They’re all still good people though.(Except Aider, he’s still a newb!)

I’m selling enchanting scrolls, so the enchants themselves. I’m not sure if you were still playing when they added the ability to cast an enchant onto a scroll and sell it in the AH?

Pizza would be awesome, but you’ll have to come down to Canberra where I live now. Let me know :)

      • I think I was around for enchanting scrolls.
Why did you have to leave Hornsby to go somewhere so far..
I’ll see about visiting. I have a sister going to ANU so if I ever go to her place. I’ll drop by yours.

  8. Hey I’m guildless too,.. we aught to make a guild of 10 “insane” players, no doubt we’d all have mad skills.

    ;)

  9. very strange, hit the gold cap a few months ago and with me it was 218k

  10. @Muted You have no idea of how badly I have wanted to make a guild like that.

  11. Bathduck Al'Akir EU

What addon/program are you using for your chart? Is it like beancounter in Auctioneer or have u manually collected the data?

Really need to start reading this guide. I’m sitting on 10 nobles deck, and a couple of epics worth only 50k and I’m only on 2-3k gold in hand!

  12. ever checked your stats? mine were reset recently (for gold aquired only) im just wondering if this has happened to anyone else. I was way over the gold cap and had gone into minus coppers on the display

    • @gilga – Yep! I have lots of wierd things happen. My ‘total gold acquired’ stat and ‘gold earned from auctions’ stats have gone over the cap at which point they become negative 214k expressed as copper. Then that figure slowly works back toward zero as you keep earning gold. Now for me both figures are back into the positives and building back toward the cap only for it to all start again!

      Crazy :)

My ‘most gold ever owned’ stat seems to have a mined of its own too, seems to update itself at wierd times and sometimes not at all. Since I reached gold cap it’s staying there but I expect it to reset anytime.

  13. hey… wondering what program you use to keep track of your sales? (the graph)

  14. well that is not the cap anymore so plix update.
im on 235k+ now and still looting

  15. They fixed the 32-bit mark by using 64-bit hardware/software. The old cap was a 32-bit SIGNED INTEGER. The new cap is therefore, likely, a 64-bit SIGNED or UNSIGNED INTEGER.

A computer can not count with negative values. The original integer (as numbers are called in computers), is unsigned and goes, for 32-bit, from 0 to 4,294,967,295, or 429496g 72s 95c (human readable: ~430k gold).

To make computers able to count with negative values, they set an attribute called “signed” or “unsigned”, when it’s “signed”, it means the first 50% of the 32-bits are to be seen as negative. In other words, the first 50% of the 32-bits are −2,147,483,648 to -1 and the second 50% is 0 to 2,147,483,647.. do you notice something here? You can’t have a debt in WoW, but the limit for a signed integer I just gave here is 214748g 36s 47c (human readable: ~214k gold).

When changing from 32-bit to 64-bit, the computer can address a lot larger space of numbers, namingly from 0 to 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 (~18 million billion gold). Considering the old setting of signed or unsigned was the default of the database software (no cast value to be specifically set to signed or unsigned), I’m assuming it’s still a signed value (meaning 50% negative and 50% positive).

If the new value is signed as before, the new gold cap will be at 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 gold, 922337203685477g 58s 07c (human readable: ~ 9 million billion gold).
If the new value is unsigned now, since you can’t have a negative gold value anyway, the new gold cap will be at 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 gold, 1844674407370955g 16s 15c (human readable: ~ 18 million billion gold).

If anyone manages to reach that, I’ll buy you cake.
