The Price of Insanity – Chart
Thanks to the input from everyone on my recent post about the cost of the [Insane in the Membrane] achievement I’ve put together a chart with all the prices. It shows a breakdown of the reputations involved and the time and gold costs in getting each one to the required level.
Keep in mind that even if you farm materials like the [Pristine Black Diamond] yourself they still have a value which you forgo by turning them in for reputation instead of selling them on the Auction House. That’s the essence of the costs included here!
All up the cost of completing the [Insane in the Membrane] achievement is 111 hours of time invested and 107,175g.
As always would love to hear your feedback and any stories of disbelief when you tell your guildmates and friends exactly how much you spent getting your title!

Awesome picture chart.
Sadly, when I got my achievement, I was in a guild with about 4 people, and none of them really understood the effort involved because I’d been playing from around 7 p.m til 5 a.m ,… most of them would sleep at 10 p.m or such, so 9 hours of effort I was alone.
Looking back, it doesn’t feel like it was as long or hard as it was,.. but,.. if I was to start it again, I’d realise, hell yeah it was difficult.
It feels kind of boring having nothing to do now, considering starting the hero of shattrath, but, I’m not sure it’s worth it the same way “The insane” was.
I gotta say the pristine diamonds were the biggest pain in the arse, but thanks to one seller who farmed them almost daily, and could come up with 1 or 2, I’d get them for 275g each (still quite a hefty price) and it’s only thanks to him I could get it done in time.
The decks, were also kinda painful, but nice and fun, to keep building up.
I’ve never had more than 10,000 gold, because I’d always spend it, but now that I’m finished with the insane, I’ve started to sell off my spares, and I’m sitting on 17,000 gold with 15+ trinkets to sell and 3,000 runecloth, haha.
Anyways, again, thanks Saate for the great website, I definately wouldn’t have done it if not for this website.
Yeah, after taking a break and spending some time leveling alts and farming Thunderfury on my warlock, I’m picking this grind back up.
I’m planning on attempting to forgo some of the $$ needed for darkmoon faire by farming a ridiculous amount of northrend herbs in sholazar. I’ll probably continue to buy up cards like crazy off the AH, but I think if i can even just farm 4-5 cards a day it will be worth it. That’s saving anywhere from 100-200g a day on cards. Beyond that, you can resell those trinkets for , typically, at LEAST 100g. The greatness card can score you some good cash.
I’ll try to document how difficult it is to farm these, but as I have an epic flight form’d druid, picking herbs is too easy to not try =]
Oh, as a side not that some may find amusing….
I was farming junkboxes when I saw a guildmate achieved [The one that didn't get away] (Catching any one of several extremely rare fish). He said nothing in response. I congratulated him on a very tough achievement, and still no response. He then complained about some nerfs in the upcoming patch, and I was bewildered how he wasn’t even amused at his achievement. Before I could respond, he got the [25 Fish Caught] achievement. I spent 4 days of straight fishing for that achievement. RNG ftl.
Man you should have entered that story in the RNG contest :)
Anyway, thanks for the chart Saate, it really puts the grind into perspective.
Oh, and a quick suggestion: I haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere in connection with the Insane grind, but the arcanums you recieve from the Shen’dralar turn-ins can be turned in to Zanza the Restless in ZG for 500 Zandalar rep. I realize this isn’t part of the Insane feat, but I still think it’s a pity to throw away 42k rep, if you’re not already exalted with those trolls :)
Great chart Saate!! However there is a little mistake on it. You said in the middle of the chart that you needed to be exalted with Bloodsail. Easy mistake as it sure feels like we need to be.
Very nice chart! :) I’ve been working on this achievement off and on since May 09.
Getting honored with the Bloodsail Buccaneers only took me a few hours, but I had the help of 2 other lvl 80s (a DK and a Shaman).
After that, me and that Shaman actually spent a few days in Tanaris killing the pirates and wastelanders there to get the Steamwheedle Cartel factions back up to at least neutral (as it was highly inconvenient not being able to enter a goblin city). Only recently have I picked back up farming rep for them in Dire Maul. Now I’m revered with Gadget and honored with the rest.
I haven’t even started the Ravenholdt yet. I have a little bit of rep with them from when I was leveling back in BC, but not much. A rogue in my guild farms the junk boxes for me whenever he gets bored. I have about 40 saved up so far. No one ever sells the junk boxes on Misha unfortunately. I do have a lvl 60 rogue that I’ll break out once I get to this point.
For the Shel’dralar, I’ve had to farm librams on my own as no one on Misha sells them. Whenever I think about it, I’ll whisper people who are under the /who tab for Dire Maul that I’ll buy their librams if they get any, but I haven’t had any luck with that. Pristine Black Diamonds are very expensive (+200g), but I never buy them unless they go below 50g. Doesn’t happen every often, but I have 40 saved so far. I can’t remember if you noted this in your guide, but there is 1 non-repeatable quest that yields 500 rep and 1 class specific quest you get from a random drop in Dire Maul that also yields 500 rep for the Shel’dralar. It’s not much, but that’s 2 less librams you need to turn in…
The Darkmoon Faire is definitely the most expensive. Decks are usually extremely pricey, but I never buy them unless they’re under 300g (a rare find). Most of my rep has come from constructing my own decks. I buy the greater Darkmoon Fair cards for 20g or less. I also buy rogues, mages, and swords decks for 14g and their respective cards for a fraction of that. It’s taking a long time, but I’m revered now. I buy herbs if they’re cheap enough or farm them myself on an alt sometimes, but I’d rather just buy my way to exalted for these guys and save farming for the other reps. The nice thing about buying the Darkmoon Faire stuff so cheap is that I always make a 100+ gold profit on the trinkets and get all my gold back for the lesser decks by AHing the armor. :D
Both the Zandalar Tribe-rep and the class-oriented libram is included in Saate’s guides as far as i know. :)
But i can’t recall reading about the drunk Ogre in Dire Maul who you can sell all loot you get for farming in DM. That’s if you don’t kill him before the King is dead and you talk to the ogre that comes running and makes you the king instead.
Myself have just about 10k more rep with Darkmoon Faire for the title. :)
